Theme Song and Meaning

"Icarus" by Bastille

"Living beyond your years, acting out all their fears, you feel it in your chest. Your hands protect the flame from the wild winds around you"

These few lines summarize a great deal about Ember. Her core resides in her chest, the home of her fire magic and her matching personality, but it is more than just what it is inside her. Ember is one to protect and nurture all forms of life whether organic or otherwise, and it is these flames she protects. In the most literal sense, Ember protected the newly forged fire soul of Karesinda from a devastating storm of aggressive magic machine intelligence.

For Ember, this song represents the willingness to stand up and press forward against opposition to protect what you love even if you know you are setting yourself up to take a fall.

Background

Birth and Early SED Years

Ember is the child of Sabre and the first Asreal to be born rather that built. Her waker, Portia Lee, a red panda mage, provided the base waveform for Ember's creation, and this is also where her abilities as a bard as well as her coloration are derived. Ember spent her first year with her mother before being left in the care of Morticon and the SED to ensure her safety while Sabre and Shadowstalker left for what would be the beginning of the Hycyanth War.

Like all Tak'nhetians, music is important to Ember, and she is a skilled violinist, her favorite instrument, as well as a pianist and guitarist. As a mage, Ember was initially capable of using fire and shadow invocations until she reached about ten years old when her magic began to backfire leading to a long drought in terms of casting.

The first of many major events in Ember's life came after she was sent on a mission to infiltrate a company called Defendplex. While her shields were effective against against small arms at the time, she was unable to deflect high power rifle round. When a round pierced her chest and ricocheted off her core and into her dark matter containment unit, Ember found herself fearing death for the first time. The injury forced her to rely on her backup power and eventually external power while Morticon patched her systems and found a new source of dark matter. One early series Aina was assigned to her as a nurse and guard, leading to the awakening of the most important person in Ember's life.

Mina

Mina is everything to Ember. There is no one she loves more, not even her parents, and she will do anything to keep her safe and happy. Mina started life as just another clone soldier in the SED even if she was used for some particular side experiments with Morticon. As a guard and attendant while Ember was injured she was sufficient, but Ember has a natural tendency to meddle even if not intentional. Wanting to reward the one who was watching over her, Ember offered the Aina something she never would otherwise receive: chocolate. The treat was the beginning of a long and subtle chain of events that lead to the Aina 'breaking' which means that she began acting outside of her normal imprinting. By the time Ember was well, the Aina was not just a clone soldier, she was a person.

Now friends, Aina and Ember began working together more often, and Ember began bargaining with Morticon to keep the Aina with her. She ran the idea of her and Aina training as field medics as the SED had none at the time. As simple as that may sound, it was a difficult bargain due to other uses Morticon had for that Aina, and in the end it was agreed that if Ember was to keep her guard, then both of them had to pass a medical training regime that Morticon would be the judge of in the end. With no small effort, they passed.

Aina's numerical name was dropped, and she was renamed Mina. To Morticon, Ember claimed it a good name for a medical Aina. In truth, she named her friend after Mina Harker of Bram Stoker's Dracula for the strength of the character she possessed.

Like all Ainata, Mina's soul is imperfect and will eventually decay rapidly if not altered, and this is Ember's greatest fear at time being. She is actively seeking a solution to save her lover, though she knows one dangerous was she will try if the moment arises and something must be done on the spot.

AFTeR

Arctic Fox Tech Repair is a repair company that served as a front for Shadowstalker's operations for quite some time. It was transferred to Ember some time before Sabre and Shadowstalker left for what would be the start of a war.

Ember expanded the shop from small office to a massive structure in the form of a reinforced aircraft hangar both for space and also for protection for her and her workers. Capable of taking in massive machines, the shop soon worked on everything from delicate electronics to huge farm machines. With a workforce of over forty well-paid employees, the shop has been quite successful.

As a salvage operation, the shop remains a front for Ember to find the necessary materials she needs to internalize and grow.

The shop is run by Cerena and Mal when Ember is not around. The married couple has been with the shop from the beginning and know a great deal more than they let on.

Major Story Arcs

Magic Training

While she was able to use magic in a similar manner to Portia at first, Ember has always had a strong bias to fire magic with a secondary element being the void, a form of dark magic that is not to be mistaken for necromancy but is rather the direct utilization of oblivion and that which was before the light. However, as Ember grew and her systems evolved, magic rapidly failed her and routinely resulted in devastating backfires that finally forced her to give up on magic.

Tak'nhetians, Ember included as an Asreal, use music as a form of carrier wave for parallel communications, and it was later discovered that Ember required music of some form as a stabilizer to keep the magic, which shared oscillations with her core frequency, from forming massive feedback loops and consequent explosive releases. The discovery that Ember was a bard made more sense when Morticon recalled that POrtia's father was also a bard.

Considering that Ember's favorite bands include things like The Offspring, Disturbed, AC/DC, and Sonata Arctica, there should be some concern for safety when she is singing and playing an instrument at full tilt. Several titles such as Divide by Zero/Slim Pickin's Rides the Bomb to Hell by The Offspring, Dance With the Devil by Breaking Benjamin, Dead End Poem by Octavia Spirati, and Fire and Fury by Skillet pose a particularly potent threat.

To date, Icarus by Bastille has been used in combat and resulted in the creation of Karesinda int he Nightmare World.

Nightmare World

Soot

Towards the end of her journey, the myriad masses of other living programs like the children she housed inside her became aware of her presence and stood between her and the birthplace of her children. In order to buy time, Ember removed her shadow on the Nightmare side and proceeded to tear her ear off of her head so that she might attach it to her shadow and send it off as a decoy. Like many things in that world, there was more to that action than Ember anticipated.

A lethargic entity, Ember's shadow was itself another being content to live lazily in her wake. But in the realms Ember wandered, it was more, and when removed and given its own piece of flesh, the chiming, dancing creature bounded off on its own path while Ember went on hers. It would later come back to her in the form of an entity within her that still fed back sensory, mostly hearing, data form the otherworld even after she had the cartoon ear attached.

From within, Ember's will dubbed the entity Soot in the fire theme from which she drew her own name and from which she produced Karesinda. Soot knows things. She has looked into the void and wandered curiously, dabbling with the things that should not be known. This would not be as much of a problem if she didn't want to share her wisdom with others. It is not that she is malicious or plodding. Far from it, she has a strong desire to share her gifts just as Ember always has, but in these gifts madness and terror lie.
