The Mochi are two nearly identical gooroos that split by binary fission from a common ancestor

The Mochi, plural as there are two of them, are a legend among the Gooroo in addition to being the most dangerous gooroos in existence. Each one roughly 160 meters tall and virtually impervious to conventional and nuclear arms, their shapes are rumored to have been the inspiration for the Godzilla films.

The Origins of Mochi

A Victim of War

Mochi was once a very agreeable gooroo located in the city of Hiroshima, Japan. As a passive feeder, she served as a nurse and was able to gain sufficient PKE from the occasional death that happened on site. Had she been left alone, she might have been regarded among the benign gooroos such as Mobrasu and Hazmokaff. Unfortunately, she was living in Japan during the time of World War II, and she was present for the detonation of the first atomic bomb on a city. She was not at ground zero but was instead far enough away to be wounded by the heat and force of the blast but not killed. However, the death toll in the city was incredible, and as a passive PKE feeder, she was flooded. IN the course of a few days, Mochi accumulated the power of over one hundred thousand deaths, more than ten times the average elder's input. Contaminated with fallout and unable to handle the raw influx of personalities with the PKE, Mochi was unable to properly absorb and assimilate the input. Instead, the personalities of the dead remained intact, and thus Mochi possessed close to 200000 different minds by the time Hiroshima and Nagasaki were accounted for, the latter having added to the damage to Mochi due to a peculiar radiation tracking sense she developed.

Unprecedented Fission

Mochi completely lost her gooroo persona, and instead she was racked with the pain of the dead that didn't know they were dead because they lived on, in part, as part of her. IN her confusion, she attacked a small fishing boat and several small coastal town, resulting in fallout, property damage, and death. The attacks, when analyzed later, appeared to be her trying to find the families of those within her without understanding what she was. The continued strain eventually lead to an event that has never been reproduced: Mochi split in two.

It is hard to know without speaking to them, but the Mochi divided into a male and female aspect, but their anatomy does not betray that at all. The final product was two stable hive minds, giant white kangaroos with slate gray back spines shimmering with Cerenkov radiation. With thick tails and a hunched pose, one need only make their heads reptilian to get a good idea for what Godzilla look like. Stable and telepathically linked, the Mochi headed east into the ocean, following the crackle of radiation from nuclear tests.

The Unstoppable Beast

It was some time before Mochi resurfaces, but as soon as the next nuclear test occurred, something show up on the beach a few days later. Mochi took the US Military by surprise, and despite deploying their best weapons, nothing slowed the Mochi. Worse yet, their speed was assumed to be incredible at first as one would drive from land to water to have the other rise up and destroy naval vessels without anyone knowing there were two targets rather than one. To further complicate the issue, any time the Mochi opened their mouth they emitted a powerful beam of scorching radiation. Only when trackers started using radiation as an indicator did they find the two shaped of the Mochi moving together in the Pacific Ocean.

It was not long before conventional weapons were exhausted in an effort to damage or slow the Mochi as they tracked ever Eastward. Later nuclear tests were anything but, and the use of additional arms was thought to be able to destroy the targets, but in the end they only made Mochi stronger. By the time they reached the southern coast of California, the characteristic emission lines of hydrogen and oxygen fusion could be detected. The Mochi were self-sustaining nuclear reactors with more than enough PKE charge to remain stable indefinitely.

Calling in the Experts

The Mochi were eventually identified as a gooroo variant, but that did little to provide any means of stopping them. The usual weak points have failed to the point that nuclear arms failed deter them. Any other useful information from Japan was not forthcoming as the Japanese viewed their appearance as the spirits of the dead exacting their revenge upon the United States. They had no idea how right they were. In desperation, the military sought the advice of the only two known elder gooroos, Tobaros and Apnuci.

Summoning Tobaros

The oldest and most powerful elder known to Europe or the Americas, Tobaros also possesses incredible resistance to thermal damage, and his general anti-monster behavior made his advice useful and his recruitment likely. When contacted, Tobaros was not as eager to assist as had been hoped, but the rising death toll and the imminent landfall in California made him a begrudging ally. Summoned away from his quiet hideaway, he stood before a panel and offered his advice while everyone on that panel stood staring at something they know could exterminate them all in seconds. Knowing this made the answer even harder understand, but Tobaros had no means to pierce an armored shell of that magnitude. He could likely resist the heat and radiation for a time, but even he had limits.

A week later, an object was brought before the panel and Tobaros attended to attest to what this object was. A long, slender rod with a sharp end and green color, just brushing his fingers over it made him immediately withdraw his hand. He knew this object carried a special danger to him, but he could not decipher its origins. When it was revealed, he demanded to see the one who made it.

Calling Forth Apnuci

Unlike Tobaros, Apnuci wanted nothing to to with anyone let alone the Mochi. She could not survive an assault against a monster using that sort of thermal and radioactive output, and she was content to simply move on. She would only communicate in handwritten letters, carefully negotiating for what she wanted before was willing to aid anyone. Her long term plans were not likely to come to fruition while under regular assault by paramilitary and adventurer groups, so she sought to secure some degree of government protection for herself, her residence, and any gooroo under her watch. This did not take long to secure given the consequences, even with Apnuci parsing the documents herself to close loopholes, and she sent back a single package and instructions including that she would only provide them with two of these objects, one for each Mochi. The next letter that arrives made her shudder. IN a script even older than hers, she was called to aid in the defense against the Mochi with the letter signed by Tobaros. That it had been sent to her meant her location was now known to Tobaros. Furious and fearful, Apnuci left her home with military protection to meet the one person in the world she has always feared.

An Uneasy Meeting

No one, not even Tobaros, could have guessed at what they had set into motion. Tobaros had been briefed on Apnuci's capabilities, skills that had expanded beyond what he had known of her up until then, but it is hard to imagine something written on paper without seeing it in person. Tobaros and Apnuci made sight of each other on the landing strip of an airforce base, and Apnuci was so terrified of Tobaros that she immediately shifted to her combat form and sent everyone running in terror. Even Tobaros was taken aback as he realized how swift she was and where that dead spire he saw in the meeting came from. They were Apnuci's javelin-like fingers. However, it was Apnuci's fear of him that made Tobaros wonder and forced him to stay as docile as he could manage to start. The rest of the base was lost when they spoke in some language that had no precedent, and it took over an hour for Tobaros to talk Apnuci down. What was said remained a secret between them, and even then it still took another day for Apnuci to return to something closer to her calm, if not cold, calculating self.

With both elders on hand, Apnuci explained how the lancets worked, and the more detail she gave, the more Tobaros realized how close to his own death he had come. They were perfectly made opposites that could annihilate each other all at once. The same poison and armor piercing ability should get through the mochi if they were indeed gooroo. Tobaros knew no human could enter his battle, so he offered to shield Apnuci on the battlefield so that she could being down the Mochi. They had realized no missile would deliver the lancet without the Mochi blasting it away. It had to be done close and personal. Something in the conversation they had made Apnuci agree, and while many have guessed, none know what they really said.

The Final Showdown

By the time both elders could be mobilized, the Mochi had made landfall and tore a path clear into Nevada. Now at the very site of the early nuclear tests, they towered above all else, and nothing was left nearby for them to destroy. It was a tactical error on their part, but they could never have known nothing of worth might be at this particular site by the time they reached it. The same flat land made it obvious that they were not alone. Compared to the Mochi, Tobaros and Apnuci's largest forms were half the side of their opposition, and it also became obvious that the Mochi could not or would not speak. In his tentacles, Tobaros carried incredibly thick shields capable of blocking much if the incoming radiation that the Mochi directed at them, and to protect Apnuci who did not share his thermal defense.

The Mochi sensed their opponents could not create any ranged attack of significance, and they ignored the elders at first until they sensed Apnuci trying to close the gap. Tobaros' defense of the other elder made it apparent that there was something important about the green one, and they soon tried to concentrate fire on Apnuci only to be blocked by Tobaros. Combat was ugly, and in the end huge slabs of rock and soil became means of blinding each other, and several times Apnuci came within striking range. With only the two lancets left on missiles as a backup, taking down at least one Mochi was critical to success, and they did have an expiration date, but the Mochi were very well coordinated and difficult to anticipate.

Tobaros and Apnuci used the apparent loss of the gooroo language in the Mochi as their own means of secret communication. Tobaros, taking Apnuci in her smaller form, launched Apnuci at one Mochi along with a barrage of stone and building fragments, masking her as she landed on one Mochi. Her strike was swift, and her unique skills allowed her to pierce the outer shell like she would any other gooroo, delivering the infectious payload before falling away with radiation burns all alone her front. Despite the size of the Mochi, the effect was swift, and the affected Mochi swayed and collapsed as it rapidly grew weaker.

As one Mochi went down, the other immediately moved to its partner's aid, trying to figure out what to do to save them. It was then that Apnuci learned that the Mochi were obligate telepaths, a side effect of them emitting deadly radiation if they opened their mouths. In a statement by Apnuci later on, she put the conversation down as a rapid explanation of motivations that quickly came to a mutual disinterest in continued combat. The true test came in Mochi learning the remedy for the poison was the source of the poison. A sacrifice on Apnuci's half and trust on Mochi's to end the conflict that ended with Apnuci countering her poison and allowing Mochi the chance to heal followed by a retreat due to extensive injury on her own part.

The Fallout

It became quickly apparent that there was no safe place for the Mochi to live on the surface, and they did not know if they would ever 'cool down' in terms of radioactivity. They were willing hidden in the bottom of an abandoned mine and made comfortable with access to new on the surface and a means to remain social while staying safely away from those they could harm. As hive minds, they held incredibly knowledge and a very balanced perspective on the worldly events. They remain to this day hidden away with occassional, well protected, visitors. They stay in contact with both elders as well, though none have discovered what they speak about.

Tobaros and Apnuci resumed their lives with one exception. Now and again an elegantly written letters is passed between them. EVen in the modern era with email and more, they still write their letters physically. The fading tension between Apnuci and Tobaros has mellowed both gooroos, but their alliance has instead worried hunters even more. It is also said that they remain in contact with the Mochi, and the doomsayers insist they are secretly plotting to release these monsters once again.
