Darkness
What Is Darkness?
The line of god moving across the darkness and declaring 'Let there be light' is well known, but what of the time before the light? The darkness caused by the obstruction of light and Darkness should not be confused. The first is a mere side effect of physics, but the latter is not just a thing but a people all of their own. Before the light, uncertainty reigned supreme such that no one thing really knew what it might look like and therefore they have no borders. A massive harmonious collective where each being felt it had a part and that its part mattered. Order was absolute, and in order there was peace and solidarity. At least this was the ideal.
There will always be moments in our lives when we question what is and what our role in the greater scheme of things is. We may even question if it matters or if we ourselves matter, and most of these questions were simply put aside within Darkness. Overall nothing really changed, and this was seen as a good thing, so what brought forth the light and all that happened after it?
The Folly of the Light
The Folly of Light is also called the Folly of Gravitas among Darkness. Gravitas, as her name implies, held a great weight that was responsible for keeping everything close and organized. There were other great forces present, but she was the only one that grew restless after eons of feeling the motions of th world around her but never being able to move herself. She contemplated this on her own for a very long time, and had anyone been more careful to note the faint ripples her shifting mood caused, they may have prevented her from reaching the conclusion that changed everything. She wanted to be something different. She wanted to be something more, and in that vague thought and focused desire, something did change.
At first she tried to bury it inside, but trying to do so caused her to move, and when she moves, everyone moves.The jostling caused waves of anger worry, but it was the moment light emerged from newly opened eyes that everyone panicked. Everyone rushed to drown the light and try to destroy it as the very existence of it was already altering their shapes and their order. At first Gravitas was among those trying to quell it, but she was also the first to realize she could not. It was then that Gravitas took on a form and fled from her place in the darkness.
The light Gravitas carries is the light that could become the Big Bang. It is the fires of fusion caused by compression of matter until reactions occur, but it is also associated with the classical light at the end of a tunnel when one dies. Gravitas remained a physical constant, but she became a mother to much more. Stars would come to be, and then some of those would bear planets with life on them. From the light there were good things for this life, but they came from Gravitas who is not only physics but also sorrow and the darker side of the soul.
The pursuit of Gravitas did not go much longer in full force as Chaos was born soon after Gravitas's flight. Split between two major aspects of Lady Luck and The Jinx, the power they carried defied all order under which Darkness lived and proved to be a formidable deterrent against attacking Gravitas, and this all comes from the near instant attraction The Jinx had for Gravitas and his creation of dreams.
Afterward, Darkness was shattered. They had forms, and while they could hide in the places between the stars, they could not forget what they had seen and felt. Even worse, the life that light created started making up stories to explain what it didn't know, and this empowered even greater dreams and twisted the old rules of the universe out of shape. While there were others like Gravitas now, most wanted the comforts of their old world back, and most saw the need to destroy or at least contain the expanding bubble of light that was polluting their once perfect world.
The Order and the Corruption by Chaos
Dreams, imagination, and wonder. All of these things and more are used by the children of the light to explain the world they live in and to endure the harsh reality that is still attached to it. If Darkness had it way, every life of the light would be put into a perfect arrangement with absolute certainty in what it would do and how it would function so that, even if they couldn't eradicate it, they could compensate for it as part of their rules. However, life always defies their attempts at meddling regardless of how dearly they pay for it.
Worse yet, after so many billions of years, other parts of Darkness were starting to change their way of thinking. Most blamed this on light poisoning, an such changes were traumatic and incredibly painful. They had to be endured because Darkness sees all parts of itself as one body, and it does not deem that any part of its being is disposable. It does not believe in cutting off a limb to save the body. It believes in mending the limb to be what it was. It is this aspect they kept them from killing Gravitas before she could escape, and even if they breached the the great Dream Sphere, she would be subdued not destroyed.
Forced to deal with a poisoned body just starting to show signs change it does not want, the last thing it would want is the presence of its nemeses Lady Luck and The Jinx. It was the latter, source of things like Murphy's Law, that cast even greater doubt and confusion among the Darkness. Having known and loved a Darkness in Gravitas, he learned a great deal about the rest of her kin. To the utter bafflement of Darkness as a whole, The Jinx has appeared on numerous occasions when a Darkness appears to be in extreme duress due to light and dream poisoning. It is his ability to make all things probable, and by appeared to them, he leaves doors open to slide back to what they were or become something else, and should they becomes purest Darkness once again, he never retaliates. Darkness does not know what to think of the force that counters it, and the doubt that breeds is pain enough.
Most Darkness, despite the actions of The Jinx, still longs for what they had and remains at war with anything associated with the light. Rare 'friendly' Darkness can occur, but they live as dangerous double agents at best given how their kin would see them.
Notable Darkness
- Gravitas - One of the oldest Darkness and accidentally the source of light and life.
- Lust - A Darkness that plays on the Light by exploiting their desires
- Pride - A Darkness that rules through whispers and misdirection that cause one to be fatally overconfident
- Greed - A poisoned Darkness that wants it all and often conflicts with Pride, it's rival.
- Gluttony - A poisoned darkness that feeds on all things, even dreams sometimes.
- Calamity - a new type of Darkness gone rogue due to negative randon exposure
- Mu - A scraggly black cat like darkness that is a lesser constant. In charge of the coefficient of friction. Likes to sit on high ground so all else falls away if it doesn't like them
- Gibbs - tall, slender entity appears to be in a black robe and wears a white porcelain jackal mask. Maintains the balance of energy in the universe including spiritual energy. Often appears to civilized species as an aspect of death including that of a reaper
- Phi Also known as the Interloper. Controls electromagnetism including everything from chemistry to magnetospheres. Actively dabbles in Chaos and interferes with beings of Light with his own hybrid creations
