History

Constable during interesting times

Serial killers have existed long before they were given this name. Constable Pi was one of many investigators in the late 1800's tasked with handling murder investigations, but he had an unusual edge his fellow investigators lacked: the ability to see death. This left him with a very unusual position of hiding what he could see and still making use of it to solve crimes. He learned early on to hide his ability after he endured unpleasant conditioning at the hands of the church when he made the mistake of speaking to a priest regarding what he was seeing.

It would come to pass that he would be in charge of a few seemingly ritualistic killings, mostly young adults of any gender or species, that most thought could be the actions of a cult. Able to see how each person died, he was able to start homing in on the culprits faster than anyone else had managed. The clarity of what he could describe actually earned him a few months in jail after they thought he could be the killer, but as the events continued without his presence, the suspicion was dropped. Unfortunately, it did mean word was getting out about his special skill in solving murders, and the perpetrators of the killings were closing in on him just as he gathered enough evidence to start making arrests.

It was not a matter of how many cultists would be needed to silence Richter, but it was a matter of how many they would use. They would be joined by an unexpected guest, and it was the sort of creature they could not cast aside, intimidate, or readily harm.

Transition to Angel of Death

Richter was ambushed by a dozen, well-organized cultists who were able to overpower him and knock him out using ether like most of their victims. He had the chance to see first hand what they had been doing to the victims as they prepared a ritual that would extract his soul so they could use it to power their infernal devices. They were rather disappointed when he seemed unafraid of this fate, but that was because they were not aware of the additional guest at the ceremony. It was a ferret with old, tired eyes and massive, tattered black wings that, despite missing some feathers, looked like they may be functional. He was carrying a sword that could very well have dated back to the crusades. What kept Richter's eyes on him was the realization that he could see death, but this being was dead and not dead all at once.

The dark angel proved to be quite capable of interfering with more affairs as he cut two of the cultists down effortlessly. Only after that did the group comprehend they had been infiltrated, and Richter was no longer a concern. The efficiency that this bring brought death was stunning, and Richter waited thinking that this would also be his death. He was half right.

The being, after laying low the cultists, introduced itself as Hale Quinn. Hale explained that he was an angel of death, but his long term ion the mortal realm was over, and the mantle must be passed on to another. Richter has been at the door to death, and it not for death, he would be a soulless husk. As it turns out, that was his fate, but because the angel had interfered, it would now be his task as a new angel of death.

Hale clarified that the role of the angel of death is to bring death where it is needed. Reapers took care of the day to day operations in which fate or chaos caused a death. The angels of death, however, were the tools of destruction meant to lay low supernatural beings and their consorts. In short, Richter was to go on protecting the mortal realm, but not it would be his task to protect them from all the monsters the world pretended didn't exist. Because of the circumstances, Hale gave Richter the assignment of defending the mortal realm from the cultists that came to kill him.

That night, Richter gained his wings, which could only be seen by him and others who could see spirits, and it would mark the point in his life where he would have to be careful. He was still able to act as a mortal, and there could be consequences had be a family after this point. He also noted that the angels of death are not the same as the angels of heaven. In fact, the angels of death had in their power to slay angel and demon alike with great efficiency. As such, both sides tried not to get noticed by them.

Richter called in help as soon as he could find it, and the crime scene was one to be remembered. Of Hale, Richter never saw him again.

Historical Operations as an Angel of Death

Richter has been one of many working on what would become the S.T.A.R. academy in all its forms. While unable to stop it on his own, Richter is one of the key spies that feed information up to higher levels and even more dangerous enforcers that can mount attacks on such demonic strongholds. He has also been reporting back on the rise of gremlins in the modern era. What he finds more disturbing is the potential indifference of heaven regarding recent developments and even the withdrawal of many guardian angels that normally help shield mortals from such monsters.

Richter has served his roles in two world wars, and in each case her aided others in thwarting plots involving bringing infernal power to the mortal realm en mass.

Modern Day Persistence

Richter still exists and performs his duties in modern day. He wields a gun instead of a sword, and he has learned to blend in and make himself easily forgotten by all but the most perceptive individuals. Modern technology has allowed him to make better records and coordinate efforts, but the enemy has done the same.

Richter appears intermittently on both Spindizzy and in St. Marin.

Notes Regarding Descendants

Coral, another springhare that Richter rescued from the cult but had to re-infuse her body with her soul, eventually became his wife. Neither spoke to anyone about what had happened or what Richter was. Their son would go on to carry some of Richter's traits at the cost of strain on the soul. Eventually this would filter down to Meluvia who suffers from a number of issues almost all caused by the strained soul of her great grandmother.

Richter also observes Meluvia at times, and since the S.T.A.R. academy got involved in her live, he has been taking much more careful note of what happens in his lineage and the places the infernal university operates.
