Of Darkness and Light

The universe system I use does not assign good or evil to light and darkness.Both light and darkness are capable of acts of incredible kindness or utter terror. It is also cyclical in many ways. First, the universe is defined as a massive circular waveform with a period so long that only agents like Darkness and Chaos can perceive it. It can be bent, it can be modified, and it can be nullified. In the case of wave collapse, the universe will restart again with additional parameters each time. The universe, according to Darkness, has been re-initialized 17 times. Only Darkness and Chaos survive this reboot, so no other life in the universe is aware this has happened unless they are enlightened by one side or the other.

The Nature of the Darkness

Darkness at the time of Origin might be considered what so many species wish for: it was a perfectly harmonized crystal with no chaos and where all components lacked awareness of self. Darkness was, in truth, beautiful. No one knew where they began or ended, they didn't know what their neighbors looked like, and so there was no discrimination nor was any entity in the Darkness more or less important than any other. It is this symmetry and harmony that would later lead post-Light darkness to do horrible things as they longed for this lost age of harmony and blamed the light for taking it away from them.

Theories on the origin of light

No one knows the true origin of Light. Some think it was a fissure into another dimension that leaked into the dark, some think it was a spark, a part of Darkness that was always there but never understood. Even the most powerful aspects of Light, Probability and Possibility, have no idea what came before them. A single caerkeeth, a darkness light hybrid made through the experiments of Darkness, seems to have touched on what may be a mirror universe that was made of Light first and then Darkness. That leaves everyone involved to wonder where things will go from here. Annihilation seems unlikely, but a slow merger may be possible.

Fracture of Darkness into Entities

The Four Primary Darkness

Mu

AS light began to fragment darkness and individual entities emerged from the newly make contract, Mu was the first to struggle in the quest to protect the perfect crystal. Wielding what would later be the strong and weak forces, she tried to hold back the expansion of the universe, but as she did, her power began to fracture. What would have been perfect atoms with absolute stability started to fall apart. Fission and fusion of nuclei became possible, and with it the transmutation of one from one element to another. She would continue to try and jam things back together until Phi came along, and the two squabbled for what could be both an instant and an eternity depending on your reference for time.

At this point, Mu usually sees herself as damage control. She tries to keep these new parameters sacred so that even the high energy reactions of fission and fusion to not unbalance the universe. In fact, she has tuned them just right so that stable conditions could later pave the way for life, which gets Phi off her back. Mu appears, when she so wishes, as a vague feline shape that varies in how light or dark it is and whether or not it has one eye or two. To see Mu, and then blink, is likely to make her appear different in an instant when observed. Mu has some resentment for beings of light and chaos not because she hates them but because she is frightened of what the future may hold.

Phi

Phi controls the aspects of the electromagnetic force and with it everything from chemistry to magnetospheres. Because of this, his reach is incredible compared to Mu's. He has hidden his hand more than others with his greater works distracting his kin as they observe his effects on Mu's stars and beyond. Also known as The Interloper, he is also responsible for seeding life, dabbling with the light directly, and even inspiring, or himself creating, dark/light hybrid species directly. Because of this, most traditional Darkness despise him, but they have limited means of punishing him especially since he has himself hybridized with the light. Even though he has been part of life's creation, he is generally hands off with the intent to observe and not interfere with experiments in progress.

Phi usually appears as a tall, spender figure of non-descript species. His skin, if it can be called that, is riddled with lightning like cracks giving him the appearance of light breathing through cracked stone or angry skies.

Gravitas

Appearing as a massive raven, Gravitas is the gentle giant of the group, but her power and influence should never be taken for granted. Her reach is infinite though weak, but by the touch of her outstretched feathers, she can move a galaxy, a star, or even the fate of a single person. Having been forced to crush the universe into a Big Crunch four times by exerting her full power over the universe, she has no heart to continue to do such. She has a close connection with Mu, and between them they created balance between the power of fusion and the pull of gravity to make stars and planets. They made places for Phi's experiments to live, and they found solace in each other when their kin turned on them for their acts.

Gravitas has been courted by Murphy, the chaos of possibility, and has since been in better spirits and become stable, but she still struggles with the past. Almost no one will dare to come for her, however, with chaos itself protecting her and her work.

Gibbs

Gibbs appears as a slender character like Phi, but he wears a porcelain jackal mask that was given to him by a being from a prior iteration of the universe. Gibbs does not command a force but instead balances out all the effects of the other forces in managing the total energy flow of the universe. The universe is an immense closed system, so he needs to balance our all the energy within it including that belonging to associated dimensions and the multiverse that has formed around the primary carrier wave. Included in this energy is that of life, and so Gibbs is also what could be called the Grim Reaper. He's not all that grim though, and he is very tender and personal with the souls he moves around. Because he balances out the others, he is sometimes seen as superior or guiding force. He is respected by the others and tries to act fairly on behalf of light and dark beings.
